A Stand (スタンド Sutando) is a physical manifestation of a person's "life energy". Though typically born from "fighting spirit", it can also awaken via mastery of a craft, strong desire, trauma, or via manual methods such as a Stand Arrow. A person that has a Stand is usually called a Stand user.
Stands did not originally exist in the Vultroverse, being a power originating from the series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. It was only after the events of Vultro Meets Shizuka Joestar (story) that Stands began to appear.
In the Vultroverse
During the Dreamcast Wave arc, Vultro the Fox encountered an alternate-universe traveler Shizuka Joestar. He was fascinated by her power, which she dubbed Porcelain, and asked where it came from. She explained the basic concept of Stands to him, and he was immediately fascinated.
Before returning to his timeline, he obtained permission to take a DNA sample from Shizuka and her brother Josuke. This sample was entrusted to Tracker the Dog, who had contacts in bioengineering and forensics.
Tracker and his team isolated what he dubbed the Stand Genome Complex, a genetic expression pattern latent in certain beings seemingly tied to the Stand phenomenon. Tracker theorized that the "virus" of Shizuka's world targeted this genetic pattern and forced it to activate, something that they could re-create. A small virus sample was created, though it was soon decided that it would be too dangerous to expose anyone to.
The sample was later stolen by Joker the Jaguar and incorporated into a new Stand Arrow, raising serious questions about who might be exposed to this virus in the Vultroverse.
